Where To Stay In Tuscany (To Live Your Under The Tuscan Sun Dreams)

UPDATED MAR 2020. When I say ‘Tuscany’ what comes to your mind? For me, it was all about the rolling hills, endless vineyards, sweeping countryside landscapes, good food, better wine, and sunflower fields. I had never been to Tuscany before so this imagery had made its way into my mind through movies like Under The Tuscan Sun and travel pictures. Sometimes destinations you have built up in your mind don’t live up to the expectations, but I’m happy to say that Tuscany didn’t disappoint. The farm stay accommodation I found was a huge reason for that. In today’s post, I am sharing it with you in this post on where to stay in Tuscany. I hope it can help you plan your trip.

What is an Agriturismo?

For your accommodation in Tuscany, I recommend choosing an Agriturismo.

I had not heard of them until I began looking into where to stay in Tuscany but it ended up being an excellent choice.

Basically, an Agriturismo is accommodation on a working farm.

As you would expect, these are not found in city centers so it allows you the chance to get off the beaten path and experience smaller towns.

Why choose an Agriturismo?

Agriturismos offer a unique, personal accommodation experience. It’s a great way to support farmers while having fun and different travel experience. I have since stayed at a few around Italy and they have all been amazing.

Most offer fresh, home cooking using seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. Some of the ingredients are produced on the very farm you stay at and they usually sell farm-made products you can take home with you.

The informal setting of the experience allows for more personal interaction and the hosts are able to share their local knowledge with you.

The local insight is invaluable and allows you to experience new sights and foods that you might not have come across otherwise.

Why I love Agriturismo La Fontaccia in Tuscany

This local treasure is located at the northern end of the Tuscan region about 30km from Florence.

As soon as we arrived, I felt like we were in the Tuscan dream I had envisioned. It was simply gorgeous!

The farm has belonged to the family for five generations and, while there are many other goodies growing at the farm, it primarily operates as a producer of organic extra virgin olive oil.

Perhaps the best souvenir you can take from your stay is some products from the farm and local area. I picked up some wine, jam, and olive oil, all of which have made a nice addition to my kitchen.

The quiet and peaceful farm is a place of complete relaxation.

You can walk on the trails around the property, play games in the common area or rest on one of the hammocks. Whatever you choose, everything is set up for you to completely relax and enjoy your time here.

The hosts

The faces behind your farm stay are the lovely trio of Samuele, Elisabetta, and Django.

I talked with Elisabetta to book this stay and she made everything so simple for us with prompt responses and all the information we needed for our visit.

Samuele was our host at dinner time so we were able to chat with him a lot. He explained so much of the Italian culture and history, which for newbies like us was incredibly helpful.

Django is the manager and resident four-legged cutie who was very used to having other dogs around and tolerated my high energy dogs so well.

I am very passionate about local businesses and meeting people like this sparks that passion so much more. This family truly made the stay as good as it was because they were friendly, laid back, and helpful.

The rooms

We stayed in the Vinaccia room.

I personally think that it’s the little things that make a huge difference at accommodations. The water bowl and treats for our dogs that were left in our room were little touches that made a huge difference here.

Our cozy room was previously a medieval watchtower, which is kind of cool in and of itself. The spacious, vintage style room had its own bathroom, TV, tea making facilities, and views of the gorgeous countryside.

Other room types and apartments are available so it’s good to look into the website and see what suits you best.

The food

As you would expect, the food is amazing!

Breakfast is included so each morning we were able to meet in the common room for the home-cooked breakfast. They serve a range of cakes, bread, fruits, eggs, meat, and cereal so there is something to suit everyone.

You also have the option to add dinner for only €25 per person which I highly recommend.

The casual, candlelit ambiance relaxes you for the delicious meal ahead.

At each course, Samuele explained the meal to us, sometimes with a history of how the traditional dish came to be, or other times with an explanation of where the ingredients came from.

Either way, there was a strong connection with enjoying the meal in front of us and learning a little something about it.

It was such a nice change because the conveniences of modern life have created a strong disconnect for us in the aspect.

I am so happy to share this local treasure with you. Hopefully, it helps you narrow down the choices if you had been wondering where to stay in Tuscany.
